Filtering and “dry” stacking is a tailings management strategy that is more and more frequently considered by ATC Williams on behalf of our mining clients. Factors that make a filtered tailings strategy a more attractive alternative when compared to other approaches may include: steep terrain, reduced storage facility footprint; conservation of water and/or reagents; improved physical and chemical stability (candidate for Best Available Technology); community perception; and regulatory requirements. Fundamental to project economics and system reliability are the operating range of tailings properties and the efficiency and adaptability of the filtration systems themselves.
In October 2016, Aaron Beckett from our ATC Williams office in Lima was invited to attend an Open House event in Italy hosted by Aqseptence Group, manufacturers of the Diemme Filtration range of pressure plate filters.
Diemme Filtration is a pioneer of tailings pressure plate filtration technology for “dry” stacking and has been at the forefront the technology for over 13 years. In the mining industry, hundreds of Diemme filters can be found in operation around the world. The brand has become synonymous with the reliable, adaptable and highly effective filtering of both concentrates and tailings, and in Peru Diemme filters are actively in use for the dewatering of tailings for dry stacking at operations such as Catalina Huanca and Parcoy.
The program for the Open House event spanned two days and included technical briefings, presentation of operational performance case studies, demonstrations at the Diemme factory and laboratory, a visit to an operating Diemme filter plant, and discussions regarding capital and operating costs. Technological revelations included plans for tailings and concentrate filter presses twice the capacity of the largest currently in operation.
We would like to thank the Aqseptence Group team in Italy for their hospitality, and their generosity in sharing the latest developments in filtration technology.
Should you require assistance in the evaluation of the most appropriate tailings management strategy for your project, ATC Williams would be pleased to offer our specialist knowledge of dry stacking, thickened tailings stacking, and a variety of other approaches.
