Mal continues to focus on engineering in waste management including landfill and resource recovery facility design, operation, maintenance and closure. Key projects include the Paget transfer station in Mackay, establishment of the Cedars Road landfill for Bundaberg, several closure designs, master plan and new piggyback cell designs with fill plans for Toowoomba, Gladstone and Lockyer Valley, new cell design and masterplan at Warwick.
Mal provided engineering input into the successful development applications for new landfills and resource recovery at Stapylton and New Chum and has continued support in the ongoing development of both facilities.
He has presented lectures at the Queensland University of Technology, Griffith University, Engineers Australia and at several conferences.
Mal has been actively involved with the Waste Management and Resource Recovery Association of Australia for more than 20 years. Mal chaired the Steering Committee of $4 million industry/Australian Research Council -funded Australian Alternative Covers Assessment Program on research and development of alternative cover systems suitable for contaminated sites and mine tailings dumps. This included the assessment of oxidation of landfill gas through clay and phytocaps and this research culminated in a national guideline for phytocaps.
