In May, Sean McMahon, Senior Engineer, and Ashley Chiam, Environmental Engineer, attended the Waste 2024 Conference in Coffs Harbour.
Sean delivered a presentation named ‘A Visual Journey: Ipswich City Council’s Future Concept for an Innovative Facility’.
The Coffs Harbour Waste Conference is the leading conference for the waste management industry in Australia. With a theme of Motivate, Innovate, Educate, the recent 2024 Conference attracted over 700 delegates.
Understanding Community Needs – Behind-the-Scenes
Sean’s presentation discussed ATCW’s role in developing a conceptual design for Ipswich City Council’s proposed recycling and refuse centre and animal management facility. The facility is essential for serving their growing community now and in the future. The primary purpose of the initial concept was to encourage early community engagement and feedback.
Sean presented a behind-the-scenes view into creating a 3D flythrough video, used as a tool to facilitate effective community engagement. He highlighted the importance of gaining engagement to understand the community’s needs and guide informed decision-making early in the design phase.
Commitment to holistic Waste Management
Attendees learned how the conceptual design delivers a highly functional, modern facility that prioritises resource recovery while providing exceptional customer experience and safety. This holistic view aligns with the waste and resource management hierarchy as detailed in Ipswich City Council’s Resource Recovery Strategy.

Sean McMahon is a Senior Engineer based in our Sunshine Coast office’s waste and resource recovery team. He has ten years of experience in the waste management field, predominantly working on landfill, transfer station and waste management facility projects. Sean has a strong background in engineering design, quality assurance and construction management.
