Laboratory Operations Manager / Materials Characterisation Technical Community Lead
What is Materials Characterisation?
Understanding the materials involved in your project is fundamental to engineering design. Armed with this knowledge, ATC Williams develops uniquely tailored, cost effective and operationally efficient solutions for our clients.
The centrepiece of our Materials Characterisation capability are our two ATC Williams laboratories. Based in Melbourne our first laboratory has been operating since 1993, with the second opening in Newcastle in 2023. Our laboratory is strategically configured to offer highest order tailings and soils testwork services, providing direct support to our internal engineering works, as well as to industry and external clients.
The ATC Williams laboratory facility supports all service areas.
The wealth of experience offered by our laboratory technicians and engineers, supported by a vast database of material characteristics, provides a unique capability to confidently predict geotechnical conditions and materials behaviour.
Many of these tests require sound professional judgement for meaningful results. ATC Williams has the competency and experience to provide an accurate interpretation of geotechnical characteristics of any soil or mine waste, particularly mine tailings.
These high-calibre, NATA registered services are available to clients across Australia and the globe.
— INTEGRATED LIFECYCLE CAPABILITIES
Our ISO 9001 accreditation allows for our on-site construction quality control (CQC) services that are available to any of our projects, whether an embankment for a tailings or water dam, earthworks for a ground engineering project or construction of a landfill. Our services range from site attendance to a full-time CQC presence.
Our strength of experience permits in-house training of our geotechnical and CQC engineers. All CQC equipment is supplied, maintained, and calibrated by ATC Williams’ experienced laboratory technicians.
Our Slurry and Mechanical Engineering team works closely with the laboratory for comprehensive characterisation of tailings materials to support specialist design of slurry transport and pumping systems. The rheology of tailings is critical to achieving not just fit-for-purpose delivery systems but complements the tailings management system to facilitate safe design and maximise storage efficiency.
In support of our engineering design services across all service areas, we specialise in Cyclic Triaxial testing, Transportable Moisture Limit testing, Rheology and Pipe-Loop, Soil Moisture Characterisation, and specialised tailings testwork including shrinkage limit density, dispersion, segregation threshold and Rowe Cell Consolidation.
— Partnership Focused
Our Materials Characterisation focus is built on ATC Williams’ philosophy that good design comes from good data.
Our laboratory and field teams provides direct support to ATC Williams’ projects, which contributes to delivery of the best possible solutions to our client’s needs.
