The Groundwork

Growing Operations in Tasmania

ATC Williams established a Hobart office in May 2021, while COVID-19 border restrictions were still in place, with a dedicated team of two.

Three years later, the team has grown to five, now led by Mark Passier, Principal Engineer and Tasmanian Operations Manager.

Mark says, “We have a great team in Hobart, working with local and interstate clients. We’re always working across the tailings, water and waste fields, and we value engaging with our clients in person while also drawing on specialist skills from our interstate offices.”

Growing Operations

The Hobart office relocated in 2023 to allow space for the expanding team and is centrally situated at 3/21 Bathurst Street. The larger office provides the facilities and flexibility for hosting meetings and events and, of course, storing the odd core tray.

“It’s great that we have a place that works for our staff, where we can bring people together and host information sessions”, Mark says. “We all work from the office daily, which we value as a team”.

Tailings and Waste Management Know How

Along with an established reputation in Tasmania for tailings management, the team has worked hard to deliver significant waste projects.

“We recently completed the detailed design for the next cell at the Copping Landfill site. Collaborating with Southern Waste Solutions on a design that lays the foundation for improving operational and environmental performance at the site as they establish their in-sourced operating model has been rewarding. It’s a significant construction project, and we’re looking forward to seeing it take shape later this year,” says Mark.

Mark takes a back-to-basics approach to project delivery. “It’s not an easy job at times, but we put a lot of value on project delivery. For us, that means a good product, reliability and collaboration with our clients. It can be a balancing act.”

Let’s meet the Tassie Team

The Tasmanian team work closely with colleagues in Melbourne, Brisbane and our regional offices on local and interstate projects. The team’s experience covers the tailings, water and waste fields, connecting with other offices to bring specialist skills to local clients.

Mark adds, “Our small teams do a lot locally, but we also connect to the greater diversity of specialist skills and larger capacity of our main interstate offices. I want us to bring the best of ATC Williams to our local clients, and I’m always on the lookout for like-minded people. If you are a mid-level engineer and see yourself as a good fit for our team, please reach out.”

Mark Passier, Principal Engineer

Areas of practice: Waste, Tailings Management.

Tassie Tip: One puffy is not enough!

Away from the office: I love Tassie for the outdoors, but for a while, my partner and I have been restoring our 160-year-old home, which has been all-consuming. You’re more likely to find me working on a door than being outside of it!

Jedd Linke-Nagel, Experienced Engineer

Areas of practice: Tailings Management, Dams Engineering.

Tassie Tip: Keep an eye out for Aurora Australis chaser groups on social media while you are here. You never know when you will be in the right place at the right time.

Away from the office: I’m slowly exploring Tassie one camping trip at a time, but I’m admittedly a fair-weather adventurer. Hobart has excellent art, food and wine scenes, so there are plenty of fun things to do when a cold night in a tent doesn’t appeal.

Debora Ferreira, CADD Technician

Areas of practice: CADD Designer/drafter.

Tassie Tip: Always carry a cap to deal with the inevitable sun, rain and wind.

Away from the office: Spending time with loved ones and my church community.

Pamella Grangeiro, Level 3 Engineer

Areas of practice: Groundwater, Surface water and Waste.

Tassie Tip: Never underestimate the weather.

Away from the office: I moved to Tasmania to be closer to nature and grow my food. My partner and I now have 15 fruit trees and 6 veggie garden beds. When not cultivating food with my partner and my lovely worms, I’m planting flowers for native bees and birds or swimming in the chilly and stunningly clear waters of the beaches around my place.

Sailendra Subedi, Level 3 Engineer

Areas of practice: Dams Engineering.

Tassie Tip: Tough to try, easy to love.

Away from the office: I love spending time with my little one and making his wish to go out and explore come true.
