The Groundwork

Peru office celebrates five successful years

In 2019, ATC Williams Peru, based in Lima, marked five years of operation. The Peru office was opened in 2014 to support MMG’s Las Bambas copper project, located above an elevation of 4000 m in the Apurímac region of southern Peru.

Our work at Las Bambas has involved engineering and construction for the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF). The TSF impoundment is primarily created with a cross valley embankment formed by rock fill, using a PVC geomembrane upstream liner and integrated grouted foundation. The embankment currently has a maximum height of 180 m, advancing to a maximum design height of 250m.

The TSF project has been resourced jointly between ATC Williams’ Melbourne (Australia) office and the Peru operation. ATC Williams’ experienced and expert Peruvian engineers have maintained the facility throughout its current life. Construction of the TSF retaining embankment has been continuous for some five years now, and our team has provided full-time technical and quality assurance support throughout this time for all elements of the dam.

Gaining ground for sustainable expansion

Allan Watson, CEO of ATC Williams, says, “Our vision is for the Peru operation to establish a broader footprint in the local mining market. Our engineering team in Peru and Australia has valuable on-the-ground experience and expertise, gained at Las Bambas and from a range of projects completed in Peru and western South America.”

Peru Office Manager, Barbara Bruno Lodwig, amplifies the vision. Barbara joined ATC Williams with the opening of the office, having worked for many prominent mining engineering consultancies in Lima. Barbara brings dedicated energy to our small group and maintains a strong connection with the local mining community. Her recent attendance to Perumin Conference hosted in Arequipa, provided an opportunity for Barbara to represent ATC Williams at the second-largest mining conference in the Americas. The conference theme of Mining: Science, Innovation, Technology and Education aligns with our values and vision of the future, as we seek to improve our worldwide visibility.

Barbara will continue to attend local mining conferences and events to network with potential clients and partners. She says, “I enjoyed connecting with our existing network at the Mining and Investment Latin America Summit, as well as at the Peru Mining Business 2019 conference. I have gained a deeper understanding of current initiatives and opportunities across the mining industry in Peru”.

ATC Williams is committed to the success of the Peru operation while expanding our profile and connection base across South America.
