ATC Williams (ATCW) is closing out the year with a strong industry presence, participating in six conferences between September and November. Across technical presentations, case studies and professional forums, our teams are contributing some important conversations from tailings stewardship and mine closure to the development of emerging industry leaders.
ANCOLD Tailings Dam Operators Forum
The conference season began with the ANCOLD Tailings Dam Operators Forum, held in Devonport, Tasmania, from 1–3 September. Senior Engineer Jedd Linke-Nagel and Associate Engineer Dr Mahdi Naeini represented ATC Williams, presenting Monitoring and Operation of a Mature TSF: A Real-World Example.
Their case study examined how long-term monitoring at the Bobadil TSF in Rosebery, Tasmania, has been used to test design assumptions, improve understanding of facility behaviour and guide ongoing management. By linking monitoring results with credible failure modes and expected performance, the data has helped refine deposition, water management, construction sequencing, Trigger Action Response Plans (TARPs) and future raise planning. The case demonstrates the value of continuous interpretation, Engineer of Record (EOR) involvement and using monitoring insights to support operations.
ACG Mine Closure Conference
Later in the month, ATC Williams joined the ACG Mine Closure Conference, held at the Sofitel Melbourne from 15-17 September. The event provided a forum for exchanging knowledge on the technical, environmental and long-term stewardship challenges that shape successful mine closure.
With the conference on their doorstep, many colleagues from our Melbourne office attended, joined by team members from Brisbane, Adelaide and the Sunshine Coast.
ATC Williams’ technical representatives included Melissa Salt, Daniel Livesey, Daniel Dohle, Philippe Garneau and Joel Eadie – who all presented during the conference. Drawing on expertise from across our offices, their contributions demonstrated the breadth of Mine closure capability within ATCW.

Highlights from the conference
For Dr Melissa Salt, day two’s keynote reinforced the need to design with the final outcome in mind. Reflecting on the address, Wittenoom and Yampire asbestos management areas, Western Australia, from an Aboriginal corporation and Traditional Owners’ perspective, she said:
“You have to design for what you need in the end. Someone owns the asset in perpetuity, not just for the life of the mine.”
Luisa Luengas enjoyed meeting prospective new clients, connecting with fellow delegates and the fun merchandise, while Carlos Gomez valued reconnecting with a former lecturer from his university in Peru.
AusIMM New Leaders Summit
The next stop was the AusIMM New Leaders Summit in Brisbane from 2–3 October. Participation in the summit complemented our technical conference program by supporting the next generation of resources professionals and for networking and connection.
