Our Numerical Modelling Technical Community (NMTC) offers a state-of-the-art, consultancy-based approach that provides practical solutions even for the most complex projects. Our unique capabilities ensure practical outcomes that are seamlessly combined with specialist in-house laboratory research and testing.

All NMTC members share a commitment to excellence and a dedication to enhancing the sustainability of operations. We deliver consistent technical excellence, whether assisting clients with hydrology and flood impact assessments, liquefaction and stress-strain behaviour of geostructures or modelling seepage and contaminant transport.

Our team employs numerical models to simulate the response of hydraulic and geostructures such as tailings, waste and water-retaining structures to various types of loading and surface water and groundwater conditions. We also support clients’ water supply and management assessments as well as operational, regulatory, and compliance requirements.

Bespoke Numerical Modelling Services

Our Numerical Modelling services cover all continuum (Finite Element, Finite Difference, Finite Layer, Finite Strain and Boundary Element methods), discontinuum (Distinct and Discrete Element methods), and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling employed in a variety of applications including but not limited to:

  • Small and large strain consolidation assessment of earth and tailings materials,
  • Stress-strain and deformation analyses (static, dynamic, coupled or uncoupled with flow)
  • Surface water modelling (for mine water management, flood modelling, mine closure and progressive rehabilitation and closure)
  • Groundwater modelling (MODFLOW-USG, MODPATH, PEST, Non-linear uncertainty analysis, analytical solutions)
  • Unsaturated and saturated seepage flow and contaminant transport modelling
  • User-developed constitutive models complemented with strong custom coding capabilities in programming languages (e.g. Fortran, Python, C/C++/C#, Fish, Matlab, VBA, etc.) and implementation in numerical modelling software platforms such as FLAC, PLAXIS, PFC, etc.
