The 10th Relaves Peru Congress 2025 is dedicated to innovation in operation, engineering, and safety in the responsible management of tailings (relaves).
Held at the Country Club Lima Hotel from 13-14 November, the tenth year of the congress celebrates a decade of advancements and developments in the sector, while exploring the future of sustainable practices in tailings management.

Wednesday 12 November
Kim will co-facilitate a workshop on Alternative Tailings Management on the Wednesday prior to the conference, in conjunction with the Tailings Center, a university-industry consortium between Colorado School of Mines (CSM), Colorado State University (CSU) and the University of Arizona (U of A). The workshop, also facilitated by Dr. Joseph Scalia, Associate Professor and Tailings Center Site Director from CSU, will include industry experts such as Erik Vlot (Weir), Todd Wisdom (SRK), Jorge Macedo (Georgia Tech and TAILENG), and Jose Luis Lara (Lara Consulting).

Congress Presentation

Dr Reza Asadi is delivering a presentation on the “Mechanical Behaviour of Rockfill: A Combined Advanced Modelling and Experimental Testing Approach.”
The presentation discusses the mechanical behaviour of rockfill materials. In summary:
“The inherently large particle size of rockfill presents significant challenges for laboratory characterisation, as conventional testing apparatus cannot accommodate specimens that capture the full particle gradation. To overcome these limitations, a multiscale digital twin framework for triaxial testing was developed using the Discrete Element Method (DEM) and applied in parallel with Large-Scale Laboratory Investigations.
Specifically, Triaxial and Oedometer tests were conducted on specimens with diameters of 0.6 m and 1.0 m to evaluate the strength and deformation characteristics of rockfill materials. The experimental data were used to calibrate advanced constitutive models implemented in PFC3D (DEM) and FLAC2D (Finite Difference Method).
The outcomes of this integrated experimental–numerical investigation demonstrate the effectiveness of combining physical and computational approaches to capture the behaviour of coarse-grained rockfill realistically. The findings provide valuable insights for improving the reliability and efficiency of rockfill dam design in accordance with current international engineering practices.”
