ATC Williams trials Innovative HSE&W Field App

2026 Technical Innovative Contest Feature

Amit Hans is a Civil and Geotechnical Engineer based in the Perth office. He has extensive onsite experience in geotechnical investigations, tailings dam construction supervision, and project management. His work spans mining, land development, and infrastructure projects, where he strives to deliver technically sound, sustainable outcomes.

Technical Innovation Contest Entrant

When ATC Williams announced the in-house Technical Innovation Contest in 2025, Amit knew what his submission would be and the problem it would solve: onsite paperwork.

“My idea was for an innovative digital companion, built specifically for the ATCW team, that takes the time-consuming site paperwork and streamlines it into a quick and reliable application designed for low‑connectivity environments,” says Amit.

Amit’s idea was selected from a field of impressive submissions, along with six other initiatives currently in development.

Innovative and Sustainable Thinking

Like most consulting firms, the engineering admin at ATCW has expanded incrementally over the years. A typical day on site can involve record-keeping at several touchpoints at the start and end of the day, and often throughout the day. Our on-site and lab teams might need to complete paperwork to track equipment calibration or hired-in tools.

For remote sites without mobile coverage, this inevitably results in a paper trail that requires post-site typing and filing.

Site Ready in Two Months

“Two months from this idea being selected, it is already a working application that our offices are actively using,” Amit proudly declares.

Amit has built the HSE&W Field App to cover every paperwork touchpoint and has provided a sustainable solution that is fast, digital, and automated.

“The app works fully offline, enabling our site engineers to complete online forms in remote locations, such as a tailings facility or a regional sampling site. The app queues all activity until connectivity returns, so there is no sync button to remember and no risk of lost data.”

Generative AI Case Study

Amit developed the app as a passion project, working outside normal hours. His submission’s core promise of less paperwork, faster filing, and cleaner records is being delivered today.

“I was able to use a modern rapid-development workflow that combines generative AI with traditional software engineering. What might have taken six to twelve months to build was delivered from concept to production in under two months, while still meeting the security, reliability and audit expectations of a professional engineering environment.”

This means Amit’s vision of optimising onsite time to focus on engineering and safety thinking is already being realised.

Smart HSE&W Features

A few of the field app’s innovative and time-saving features include:

  • Personal user dashboards
Staff see their own recent submissions, assigned projects, upcoming inspections, and overdue actions.
  • Digitised forms are converted to PDF
Forms such as Take 5, JMP (with internal check-ins so the office can confirm safe arrival), Vehicle Pre-Start, WHS Inspection, Daily Pre-Start, Incident Reports, Risk Assessments, JSEA/SWMS, Safety Share, End-of-Day and Daily Site Reports are completed and submitted in the app.
  • Automatic filing
Every submitted PDF, photograph, report and HSE document is saved into the correct project folder on our network drive, removing the need for manual filing.
  • Live link to the office
Whenever QMS updates the master project register, the changes flow into the app within seconds, ensuring that the last project is always visible to site engineers
  • A flexible form and survey builder
Custom checklists, feedback surveys or safety forms can be created in-app with no code. Features of this kind can be costly in commercial safety platforms.
  • Equipment calibration and hire register
Designed to replace the standalone GeoTester tool, all field instrument calibration records and hired-in equipment are now centralised, with searchable analytics on where and when they have been used.
  • Event-location analytics
Every submission is tagged with site, project, time and submitter, giving project managers a clear, searchable picture of real-time work locations.

Integrated User-Testing

Feedback from ATCW staff has been positive, with many feature ideas incorporated from on-site beta users. Amit is excited that more staff are showing interest as the app develops.

“One of my career goals is to contribute to innovative engineering solutions that positively impact communities and the environment. I am grateful to ATC Williams for supporting my aspirations through this opportunity.”
