CTO Corner – Building Technical Excellence Through ATC University

By Kim Morrison, Chief Technical Officer, ATC Williams

As Chief Technical Officer at ATC Williams, one of my core pillars is to foster a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement. This year, we’re taking a bold step forward by launching ATC University (ATCU), an in-house professional development platform designed to empower staff across all levels of the organisation.

Why is ATCU needed?

ATCU is more than a training initiative; it’s a strategic investment in our people, processes, and future. Built on the foundational idea of a “community of teachers and scholars,” ATCU formalises our approach to internal learning, ensuring that every team member has access to relevant, high-quality training that supports their career development and strengthens our technical capabilities.

In a technical organisation like ours, staying ahead means constantly evolving. ATCU supports this by:

  • Delivering up-to-date skills development programs tailored to our service areas
  • Offering content in formats that are engaging, practical, and accessible
  • Encouraging staff to take on roles as both learners and educators, sharing expertise across disciplines and offices
  • Aligning with our One ATC vision — promoting standardisation, collaboration, and excellence across the business

Our Three Initial Programs

We’re proud to launch ATC University with three targeted courses designed to support technical growth across our teams.

First up is Geotechnical Investigation – Drilling and Logging, which offers hands-on training in field investigation techniques and logging practices. In November, we’ll host the Tailings Engineer of Record (EoR) Workshop, focusing on the governance, responsibilities, and challenges of the EoR role and alignment with our internal approaches. Finally, one of our flagship courses, Responsible Tailings Management 101, will take place in January (Melbourne) and February (Brisbane) 2026, covering lifecycle planning, risk management, and stakeholder engagement.

As part of our commitment to industry collaboration, we’re pleased to offer a few client slots in the Responsible Tailings Management 101 course as a unique opportunity to engage with our technical teams and experience our training approach firsthand.

Looking Ahead Together

We’re already planning future modules and exploring opportunities for community-led training, mentoring, and thought leadership. Staff and clients are invited to share ideas, feedback, and suggestions as we shape the next phase of ATCU together.

ATCU is just the beginning. Together, we’re building an ATC Williams that leads with knowledge, collaborates with purpose, and delivers technical excellence every step of the way.
