By Kim Morrison, Chief Technical Officer, ATC Williams
Welcome to the inaugural edition of CTO Corner, a new addition to The Groundwork newsletter. In this column, I will offer insights from the CTO’s desk, with a focus on technical excellence, innovation, and the evolving landscape of tailings, water, and waste management.
The Evolution of ATC
As the newly appointed CTO of ATC Williams, my core mission is to ensure technical excellence across the organisation. This is especially critical at this juncture in ATC’s evolution. The company has seen remarkable growth and diversification over the past decade, evolving from a tailings business to a mining, water and waste business. Ongoing diversification is key to continued growth. Therefore, we are expanding our technical strategy to deliver even greater cohesion and scale across our operations, further embracing a unified “One ATC” approach for the future benefit of our clients and our people.
Our Strategic Pillars of Technical Excellence
I’m excited to share my vision for the CTO role and the technical future of ATC. This vision is founded on five strategic pillars that will guide our growth, culture, and impact.
1. Strategic Leadership & Vision
We will anticipate market trends and translate them into innovative service offerings that align our technical initiatives with broader business goals. We will foster a culture of continuous improvement and clearly communicate the path forward for ATC’s technical evolution.
2. Technical Expertise & Execution
Our commitment to technical rigour will be unwavering. We’ll strengthen our internal governance practices, manage risk proactively, and invest in research and development to ensure our solutions remain at the forefront of the industry.
3. People Leadership & Collaboration
Our people are our greatest asset. I’m passionate about building high-performing teams, nurturing talent through mentorship and professional development, and fostering a collaborative culture across all geographies.
4. Operational Excellence
Efficiency and innovation go hand in hand. We’ll optimise and improve our technical workflows, implement increasingly robust knowledge management systems, and use data-driven insights to track and enhance our performance.
5. External Relations & Brand Building
We will uphold ATC Williams as a technical leader, sharing our expertise through thought leadership and engagement. We respect our relationships with industry bodies, universities, and research organisations across the world, and will seek opportunities to strengthen these ties.
Together, these pillars support our purpose: to engineer our clients’ success while nurturing and growing our people. I look forward to using this space to share updates, ideas, and reflections as we chart the future of ATC Williams—one defined by technical excellence, innovation, and collaboration.
