Strength and liquefaction assessment of tailings

Historically, in situ testing of tailings has been primarily based on drilling techniques with the recovery of tube samples, coupled with standard penetration test (SPT), shear vane testing and laboratory test work used to assess the tailings properties.

Numerical Modelling of Seismic Liquefaction for Bobadil Tailings Dam

One of the causes of tailings dam failure has been seismically induced liquefaction during earthquakes. Liquefaction, if mobilised, significantly reduces the stiffness and strength of affected soils in the embankment dam or its foundation and may lead to large deformations and dam failure.

Central thickened discharge scheme for Ma’aden’s Mansourah-Massarah Gold Project

This paper provides a comprehensive case study detailing the inception, development, commissioning, and initial operations of a state-of-the-art tailings management facility in the Mansourah-Massarah Gold Project, situated within the arid terrain of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and operated by the Saudi Arabian mining company Ma’aden. With an annual average rainfall of a mere 80 mm and evaporation rates of 5,800 mm per annum, the mine relies on a water supply sourced from Taif town, a distance of 330 km.

Evidence for Microbial Mediated NO3 − Cycling Within Floodplain Sediments During Groundwater Fluctuations

The capillary fringe is a subsurface terrestrial-aquatic interface that can be a signiﬁcant hotspot for biogeochemical cycling of terrestrially derived organic matter and nutrients. However, pathways of nitrogen(N)cycling within this environment are poorly understood, and observations of temporal ﬂuctuations in nitrate (NO3−) concentrations lack the necessary resolution to partition between biotic or abiotic mechanisms.

Water Management and the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management

In January 2019 the Brumadinho Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) failed, resulting in the deaths of 270 people. This was the second major fatal TSF failure in four years, which led to an industry-wide review of tailings management and the subsequent release of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (the Standard) in August 2020.
