Assessment of Foundation Liquefaction for a Tailings Retaining Structure

In recent years, the world has observed the catastrophic impacts of tailings dam failures. Resulting impacts of these were many deaths and widespread environmental destruction. Liquefaction has been a major cause of tailings dam failure in the past and may occur in saturated soils under static or seismic loading conditions

SRTM data: When is it appropriate?

Design flow estimates require evaluation of catchment properties such as catchment area, catchment slope, and stream length. Detailed terrain data can be expensive to purchase, especially in regional Australia where terrain capture must be commissioned. It has become common practice to supplement terrain data with Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) data with a grid resolution of down to approximately 30 m.

Interpolating and modelling rainfall events across very large catchments

Following several recent devastating flood events in Queensland, KBR was commissioned by Central Highlands Regional Council to undertake a floodplain management study and develop a management plan. This study involved the development of a large-scale hydrological model accounting for approximately 131,000 km² or just over 90% of the entire Fitzroy River basin to accurately represent the flooding conditions for two major flood events

Sand Canal Beach Restoration in Urban Waterways

Erosion of the sand beaches at Newport Waterways has resulted in sand from the upper beach being deposited under pontoons and vessels which can lead to grounding damage at very low tides. Following a site inspection, the main cause of erosion was identified as being uncontrolled stormwater run-off from the residential properties facing the canal.

The influence of infrastructure embankments on the consequences of dam failure

Dam break inundation mapping is the first part of the assessment of the consequences of failure of a dam. Although there has been significant expenditure on research on the breach hydrograph, there has been little attention given to the influence of infrastructure embankments across the inundated area on flow paths, depth of inundation and consequences

Whole of basin flood modelling

Subsequent to the findings of the Queensland Floods Commission of Inquiry, Kellogg Brown & Root Pty Ltd was commissioned by the Department of Natural Resources and Mines to prepare whole of basin flood maps for 16 coastal river basins ranging in size from 1600 km2 to 142,700 km2 to improve flood emergency awareness in Queensland. The maps and animations developed provided an appreciation of flood magnitude for both the 1% Annual Exceedance Probable flood event and an extreme event intended to approximate the probable maximum flood.

Optimising the Erosional Performance of Store and Release Covers through Appropriate Landform Design

Increasingly store and release covers are being provided to tailings, waste rock and heap leach facilities as part of the closure design with the purpose of controlling percolation of rainfall runoff through these facilities. While the focus in design is on the specification of the cover with respect to percolation performance, the success of the cover over the long term is highly dependent on erosional stability.

Numerical Modelling of Seismic Liquefaction for Bobadil Tailings Dam

One of the causes of tailings dam failure has been seismically induced liquefaction during earthquakes. Liquefaction, if mobilised, significantly reduces the stiffness and strength of affected soils in the embankment dam or its foundation and may lead to large deformations and dam failure.
