It has been over a decade since ATC Williams first opened an office in Lima, Peru, to support MMG’s Las Bambas copper project, located in the Apurímac region of southern Peru. ATC Williams’ Peruvian engineers have maintained the site’s Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) throughout its current life.
We recently caught up with Dr Roberto Cier, Peru Country Manager and Senior Associate Engineer.
“Since I became Peru Country Manager in March 2025, my focus has been on creating a roadmap for sustainable growth, meeting with clients and building in-country connections,” says Roberto.
“Our Lima crew has been very enthusiastic in making me welcome as their new manager. Four of the team work onsite permanently at Las Bambas, so I have started travelling there regularly to assist with operations. I am taking expressions of interest from senior engineers to join our team in 2026.”
In September, Roberto travelled to Australia to participate in ATCW’s annual Technical Seminar. He commented, “Our One ATC approach enables dynamic international liaison on projects. The trip to visit our Brisbane, Melbourne, and Perth offices was an opportunity to engage our Australian-based team with our Peru operations.”
Roberto is a highly respected presenter and recently delivered a feature presentation titled ‘Numerical Modelling as a Tool for Tailings Management’ at ‘Agua Y Relaves 2025’, an International Tailings and Water Conference held in Lima in August.
As an advocate for tailings management, Roberto is an Adjunct Professor in Civil Engineering and supervises students in an undergraduate thesis project with Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. He will be participating as a lecturer in an online tailings management module for the Asociación Peruana de Ingeniería Geotéchnica, designed for final-year geotechnical engineering undergraduate students and focused on the requirements of the GISTM.
In November, Roberto will attend the 10th Relaves Congress, held at the Country Club Lima Hotel. The theme for 2025 is Innovation, Operation and Safety in Tailings .
Three staff members from the ATC Williams Melbourne office will be attending the conference. Dr Reza Asadi, Senior Engineer, is presenting a paper. Kim Morrison, Chief Technical Officer, will co-facilitate a pre-conference workshop in conjunction with The Tailings Center. Darren Watt, CEO, will be in attendance along with Christian Rebata, Senior Engineer, who is based in Lima.

It’s very satisfying that our Peru team knows that they are part of a respected global company,” says Roberto. “We are committed to establishing long-term relationships in South America, and we have the foundations in place to deliver complex projects for successful outcomes.”
